crimped joint or to fusion splice them using a precision electric arc joining process.

Whilst the equipment for fusion splicing is expensive, the significant improvement in optical loss is considered beneficial
enough to warrant the associated cost. The added benefit is that the time on-site for an engineer is considerably less,
which keeps labour costs down and, in the case of a damaged active network, gets the network back up and running
more quickly.
